Saint This Week
St. Paul Miki & Companions

Feb 6/Martyrs

Paul Miki, Jesuit scholastic, and his 25 companions, including two other Jesuits, six Franciscans, fifteen tertiaries, and two laymen, were crucified by order of the ruler Hideyoshi on February 5, 1597 at Nagasaki. Among them was the Mexican, Filipe de Jesus, the first martyr from the Americas to be beatified. They were canonized in 1862 by Pope Pius IX.

St. Josephine Bakhita

Feb 8/Virgin

(+1947). Born around 1869 in Sudan and raised in the Islamic faith, she was kidnapped around the age of seven by slave traders who gave her the name, “Bakhita,” meaning “lucky one.” Around twelve she was sold and brought to Italy, where she was introduced to the faith, baptized, and eventually granted freedom. She joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity, and for 25 years served the sisters as cook, seamstress, and portress of their houses in Venice, Verona, and Schio. She was noted for her sweet nature and her musical voice. In 2000 she was canonized as the first Sudanese saint, as a witness to evangelical reconciliation and a model of freedom.

St. Scholastica

Feb 10/Virgin

(+ around 543). Twin sister of St. Benedict, eventually interred in the same grave with her brother. Invoked against storms; patron saint of Benedictine nuns.
